The IEP creates an opportunity for teachers, parents, school administrators, related service personnel and students to work together to improve educational results for the student - whether it is a learning difficulty or a need to express giftedness in a challenging manner. Each person has strengths and weaknesses and we hope to encourage the strength to flourish and to develop coping strategies to support any weakness. Usually, using a diversity of teaching styles and recognizing and addressing a diversity of learning styles satisfies individual requirements. When the need, however, is greater, informal IEP's may be developed to help ensure a collaborative approach to meeting these needs.
Students may also have been identified formally with need statements as designated on a formal IEP. Need statements are created regularly to identify areas of students' exceptionality - giftedness, learning difficulties, behavioural concerns- and to provide goals for supporting these needs.
Our curriculum is intended for all students, however, students may have their program adapted to meet the needs identified in the IEP.
Regular discussions with parents ensure we are all working together and supporting each other. Parents will discuss appropriate adaptations with school staff and make sure they understand how these adaptations affect the assessment and evaluation of the student's work.
